CELLIST BERNARD GREENHOUSE, 1916–2011 - By Rory Williams posted May 18, 2011, from www.allthingsstrings.com

Cellist, soloist, educator, and mentor Bernard Greenhouse, a founding member of the venerable Beaux Arts Trio, died of heart failure May 13 at his home in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. He was 95.

Guilet was later replaced by Isidore Cohen, and the new lineup toured and recorded extensively until heart problems forced Greenhouse out of the group in 1989.

Peter Wiley, who would later play in the Guarneri Quartet, replaced Greenhouse in the trio.

“I knew him as such an immense artist, particularly in the cello world,” Wiley says. “He was of that same generation of people that, when I was growing up, we’d listen to, such as [Pablo] Casals. I was very familiar with Mr. Greenhouse’s playing and reputation, of course.

Greenhouse was born January 3, 1916 in Newark, New Jersey, and studied at the Juilliard School ...
